Trina Hydrogen announced on July 24th that it will establish a 1GW electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Jiangsu, China. The total investment of this plant would be around 700mn Rmb ($100mn).
Trina Hydrogen released its new 1000Nm3/hr ALK electrolyzer by the end of 2022. Seemed like a new comer, Trina Hydrogen is regarded as a highly competitive player of this sector-the owner of this company hold another prestigious company, Trina Solar.
Founded in 1997, Trina Solar Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in the research and development, production and sales of PV modules. The company shipped 43GW solar modules in 2022, ranked No.3 globally, after Longi and Jinko Solar.
There is a trend that China’s solar manufacturering companies flocking into electrolyzer sector recently.
Longi Hydrogen, established in March 2021, has built 1.5GW electrolyzer manufacturing capacity and plans to expand to 5GW in three year. Sungrow Power, a global leader of PV inverter, entered electrolyzer sector in 2022 and has built 1GW capacity which may be added to 3GW very soon.
Electrolyzer is an inspiring market, according to Bloomberg NEF, between now and the end of the decade, about $130bn will be spent on electrolyzers — the machines that use an electric current to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen — in what BNEF describes as a “breakneck growth pivot”.
This means that manufacturers of electrolyzers, which are vital for the production of green hydrogen made from renewable energy, are racing to expand their production capacities to meet the coming demand.
And according to latest figures from BNEF, three Chinese electrolyser makers — Longi, Peric and Sungrow — are already leading the global market in terms of annual manufacturing capacity. And Belgium’s John Cockerill, in joint fourth place, produces most of its electrolysers in China.
The race has begun. China is trying to cement its cost competitiveness, the recently released procurement information revealed the price of domestic made ALK electrolyzers are nearly 75% less than western peers. In addition, several Chinese companies have entered PEM electrolyzer market in 2023, expecting to reshape this market as well.
