In January 2024, 3 Chinese electrolyzer producers have announced they received purchase orders from oversea markets for 65MW electrolyzers, signaling breakthroughs might be happening everywhere.
All of these 3 contracts are for ALK electrolyzers which Chinese producers have significant cost advantages.
On Jan 17th, Shuangliang Eco-Energy Systems Co., LTD. and its wholly-owned subsidiary Jiangsu Shuangliang New Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. successfully won the bid for the United Solar Polysilicon (FZC) SPC Oman project, with a total value of US$58,320,592. This project is a 100,000-ton photovoltaic material project and is the largest such project overseas. The contract includes multiple pairs of rod reduction furnaces and tail gas jacketed tube devices, 20MW electrolyzer system and lithium bromide refrigeration units.
Shuangliang Eco-Energy Systems, one of the largest LiBr absorption air conditioning system and absorption heat pump producers in China, began its electrolyzer business in 2022. In 2023, it released 1000Nm3/h and 2000Nm3/h ALK electrolyzers which is said to have an energy efficiency of 4.04kwh/Nm3@3000A/m2. The company also announced that it is capable of producing 300 units (~1.5GW) ALK electrolyzers annually and preparing for further expansion.
On Jan 18th, LONGi Hydrogen successfully won the bid for 20MW electrolyzers of the Tashkent green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan. The green hydrogen project was constructed by Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) and is the first green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan. On November 29, 2023, the Tashkent Green Hydrogen Project was officially launched. Uzbekistan President Mirziyoyev, Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih, and ACWA POWER Chairman Mohammed Abunayan attended the ceremony.
The Tashkent Green Hydrogen Project is the first green hydrogen project in Central Asia to enter the implementation stage, and it is also the first green hydrogen project implemented overseas by PowerChina. It includes a new green hydrogen production plant with a capacity of 4,000 Nm3/hr powered by a 52MW onshore wind farm. When fully operational, it will produce 3,000 tons of green hydrogen per annum, which will be used to make 500,000 tons of ammonia fertilizer. It will also save the use of natural gas in fertilizer production. It will save Uzbekistan 33 million cubic meters of natural gas every year, effectively alleviating the country’s natural gas supply pressure.
On Jan 26th, Chinese new energy company Beijing Mingyang Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd (Mingyang Hydrogen). and Thailand LNG distributor IBCLNG Co., Ltd. signed an agreement in Bangkok to build Thailand’s first commercial green hydrogen project and boost Thailand’s green and low-carbon transformation.
According to IBCLNG, this is a 25MW alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production project and the first commercial green hydrogen project in Thailand. The company will purchase high-performance electrolyzers from Mingyang Hydrogen, and China will provide technology support to Thailand to build a green hydrogen “production, storage and use” applications in Thailand.
Chalunsu, deputy general manager of IBCLNG, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency that hydrogen energy is a clean and widely used secondary energy source and will become an important carrier of global energy transformation and development. Most of the hydrogen energy currently used in Thailand is produced from fossil fuels or converted from industrial by-products.
Mingyang Smart Energy, Mingyang Hydrogen’s holding company, is a world-renowned wind turbine manufacturer, in term of installed power of turbine, Mingyang Smart Energy is the 3rd largest producer in China, following Envision and Goldwind.
As a trend to integrate green hydrogen production capacity with wind power project is prevailing, Mingyang determined to enter hydrogen equipment manufacturing business in 2022. The company has released its 2000Nm3/hr ALK electrolyzer in Oct 2022 and will develop its own PEM electrolyzers.
