Hydrogen demand growth is increasingly being driven by real-world industrial and transportation applications as projects move beyond policy announcements and into commercial development.
Recent developments across several regions suggest the hydrogen sector is entering a new phase of maturity. In China, policymakers are targeting greater adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles as part of broader decarbonisation efforts, highlighting the potential role of hydrogen in long-haul freight transport.
At the same time, new industrial emissions policies are encouraging greater use of hydrogen across hard-to-abate sectors including manufacturing, refining and steel production.
Elsewhere, Europe continues to advance large-scale industrial hydrogen projects. A major hydrogen-based steelmaking project in Sweden recently received regulatory approval, reinforcing expectations that the steel sector could become one of the largest future consumers of low-carbon hydrogen.
The project aims to replace traditional coal-based production methods with hydrogen-powered alternatives, providing another example of hydrogen moving closer to commercial deployment.
The aviation sector is also attracting growing attention. In South Africa, progress on an electro-fuel sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) project highlights the expanding role of hydrogen-derived fuels in efforts to decarbonise long-distance air travel.
As airlines and regulators search for practical emissions-reduction pathways, aviation is increasingly viewed as a potentially important source of future hydrogen demand.
Infrastructure development remains another key theme. Germany is continuing to expand plans for its hydrogen backbone network, reflecting the growing recognition that large-scale hydrogen markets will require significant transportation and distribution infrastructure to connect producers with end-users.
Taken together, these developments point to a common trend. While production capacity remains important, the market’s focus is increasingly shifting towards demand creation, infrastructure development and commercial deployment.
For hydrogen producers, investors and project developers, understanding where future demand is emerging may become just as important as identifying where hydrogen can be produced.
As the sector evolves, transportation, industry, steelmaking and aviation are emerging as some of the most closely watched demand centres in the global hydrogen market.
